General Discussion / Re: Helmet and Go Pro Mounts

I have a Drift Ghost XL camera mounted on the side of my helmet. Loop recording with a battery charge for up to nine hours. A simple press of the on and off button and the video records. Not too big, but its also not tiny. Avg size.

With the exception of wearing a D.O.T. helmet and eye protection, the great state of Nevada has left the rest of what to wear as our choice. As long as the rider is aware of the risks and consequences, it's their body. In my opinion, not wearing full gear when riding is a very poor decision. Make poor decisions, get poor results. Its as simple as that. Riding a motorcycle is easy, you just need to make the right decisions!

I've been back to teaching motorcycle safety since mid June for both the community colleges and for the state. A few curriculum changes in the classroom and constant disinfecting of the classroom and motorcycles. No sharing of anything and a mask is a must while indoors. 6' distancing a must.

Last track day went well, overall. After searching for a trailer to borrow, I ended up buying and building the harbor freight medium duty with plywood decking. Worked out great! My car, not so much.

In truckee stopped for gas and to caravan with a friend- - found a puddle of coolant: water pump seal busted. My buddy brought me back to Sparks, where i had a newer vehicle, but that vehicle did not have a tow hitch.  I had ordered one from amazon that arrived the day i was leaving- so he helped me install it. Bolt holes barely lined up, but with enough torque from the HD Impact Driver we got it to stick.

Saturday on the track was a bust too - my clutch fell apart inside the clutch housing. I was on track and suddenly my clutch lever went limp! No prob to keep going on track, but starting and going slow would be an issue  :|)  Fiddled with it until i got some master mechanic advice to tilt the bike over onto a paddock steel column, open the clutch case. The whole clutch basket was in tact , undamaged, and came out in my hands  ??? .

Turns out there is a retaining nut inside the clutch basket that came loose. Must have been a home jobbie replacement. Cranked that down with the impact driver, bolted it all up, had the master mechanic adjust the cable and lever, and voila the clutch felt better than before!

So I missed out on all day Saturday riding, but Sunday was a blast. Rode the entire 5 mile course at T-hill, and put up competitive numbers. Convinced myself to register for B class next time

Definitely bringing my tool kit again next time, including this bad boy https://www.amazon.com/Bosch-Bare-Tool-IWHT180B-Lithium-Ion-Friction/dp/B004BG222I/?pldnSite=1

I'll be out Monday with Fun Track Dayz.

Best,
Jim

Two other SSA members will be there too, Dragon and 22slow.  Look for Dragon on his SSA labeled KTM 990.  They'll be on the West course.

Smart there RR!  The virus only has to get conditions right once and you're screwed.  Better to play it safe and hopefully avoid this thing altogether.  That's my plan anyway.

So far, so good.   :laughing :o :|)

General Discussion / Our mountain pass roads are st...

I drove Monitor Pass in my 4-door sedan today just for a change of pace, plus I was going to video record it for my own personal consumption.  Everything looks shorter and taller, but no wonder we see cars going so slowly.  It's not safe for them and the road is so steep it takes a lot of power to overcome gravity.

I've driven a few of our other roads in the past and didn't come away as awestruck as I was today.

I came away from the experience with a huge appreciation for how casually and easily we ride these roads.  Because when you're in a car trying to speed up to something resembling a spirited pace, you feel like you're doing alright until you look at the speedo.   :spank

No motorcycles passed me today, simply because there were few, if any, motorcycles out riding today, just Harleys.   I was so hoping I'd get passed by some fast moving sportsbikes from Sacramento or the Bay Area, but I got skunked.  Stopped along the way a couple of times and made a full lap of it.  Nada.  Did everyone decide to drive today too?

Even took a detour through VC and nada, had the road all to myself.  I even passed a HD leaving VC!

Good for all those sheltering in place! Stay safe.

Oldguy and I are actually heading down to Thill this weekend for the Z2 event. Should be a fun time.

Jimjoe- I never did hear how your last trackday went? Did the trailer and everything work out ok?

Headed to Thunder Hill Monday July 27, Sonoma on August 10!

There are three nearby tracks, from what I have gathered: Thunder Hill in Willows, Sonoma, and Laguna Seca (Monterey). Fernley's road course appears to be closed, possibly for sale. Looks like they have an off road course and a dirt track though.

Check out the event coordinators for info: Z2 Track Days, Carters at the Track, Fun Track Dayz

Read the post titled Track Day beginner info on here as well.

I also went the harbor freight trailer route for transport- cost me ~$500 and a weekend to build.
