Just a little housekeeping to keep the calendar up to date.  Come out for Tuesday bike night and enter to win a two-for-the-price-of-one track pass.  It's usually on the list of items to be raffled off.  And the raffle is free.  ;D

I saw too..  ;D ;D

Well, I just requested to get off work for both days. I think I'll make only Sunday like last time.

I'm looking forward to see everybody again. This time I wanna ride with Dale, Peter and other guys too.

Also, I'm wondering if we will have another sushi after the Track.

In September how's the temperature in Fernley?

It's usually still too hot. Seems like it is only spring that you can't really count on from a rain point of view. As long as it is dry the temps will be in the riding range almost for sure.

Rick. Yes let's do Sushi after the track again. I really enjoyed that. Brad was so entertaining. Watching all of you order a platter of food was good to.

This trackday isn't a for sure thing for me yet. I have a deer tag this year and that date is right in the middle of the season. So depending on what happens with my hunt, I may be at the track or I may be hunting deer.

Too bad it's not a horse tag, you could just pick one off as you head down the back straight.

Hey Guys, I just joined the group.  I recently moved back to Lake Tahoe after being in Texas for over 10 years. Thanks for putting this site together definately helpful.  I took a ride to Sonora last weekend using one of your maps.  The Markleeville to Bear Valley section was sweeeet!

I have never done a track day or gotten my knee anywhere close to dragging.  I'm 39, been riding a few years, have a 2006 Ducati Supersport 800 and have the right gear.   My tire has good side tread but little worn in the middle from too many straightaways in Texas.. ha ha.  Is this ok?

What is the better day to go the 18th or 19th to meet people.  Also are there instructors for rookies like me?  I'd prefer to go my own pace and speed up throughout the day but don't want to hold people back around me.  Any advice?

Thanks!!!

Andy

I am really looking forward to heading out for this event with everyone,
It will be the first time in 2 years I can just ride.  For more than 2 years i've been working at making them great experiences for others...  It's my turn just to ride with my friends, it's 'Justino' time.
Thanks for holding the event.

Hey Andy.  Every SSA day I've ever been to has instruction, and you're in good hands with them.
You're on the right track just riding you own pace and speeding up when you are ready.
Lot's of trackday organizers want 'new or nearly new tires'   My personal rule is >60%
Also, Saturday usually has a couple more people, but both days are fine for meeting people.
I like Sunday more, cuz people are more relaxed at the conclusion of a two day event.

The folks here at the SSA will help you with your questions, but i thought I'd take a stab at some of them.
--- See you at the track :)    ---

Andyhelfen. No Problem with the instruction. We have instructors at the track to help make you a better rider. When you come out to the track remember this. We all started where you are right now. All of our staff is very eager and will be more than willing to help you make your experience at the Track very exciting.  You'll learn more in 1 day of track than several years on the street.  I can give you a list of things to bring if you need it.  Or you can just pit with me.

I heard Michael Earnest Say: "But the stickiest tire you can find for the track. Think of it as an insurance policy"  When he said it I didn't really believe it. Now that I've done so many days at the track I've lost count.  I realize is very good advice. Also if you don't you'll still be OK if you use your Street compound at the track. Street compound is so much better now that it used to be.  If your center tread is down to the wear bar. Please replace it. You won't pass tech.  If you have a question on it. Bring it down to our bike night on Tuesday at La Vecchia and we'll take a look at it. We'll let you know what we think.

Always happy to get some new riders on the track.  If you come out you'll be one of the ones we saved.  It's a good feeling.  Looking forward to seeing you at the track.

Yeahhhh another Ducatista ;D Andy, welcome to the site, if you liked Sonora, you are in for some amazing riding. At track days, sometimes we have more people on Saturdays and sometimes on Sunday. The core SSA'ers (quite a few) will be there both days. I'll be wearing a green staff shirt and will be the grid Manager for the morning sessions. Our sessions are usually separated in three groups: "A", "B" and "C". "A" for racers and fast/very experienced road and track day riders; (holding race lines and keep a fast pace while been predictable); "B": for experienced/strong road riders, with quite a few track days  experience (holding good lines at a slower than "A" pace, working at been predictable), and "C": for some experience on the road and very little or no track experience: (slower pace, no knowledge of lines, learning the basic track skills). "C" is where our instructors focus most of their effort. Do not worry about you holding anyone back. Even the fastest guy I know started out carefully and slowly. The racetrack is the right place to hone your skills. I am looking forward to meet you.

ps We host a bike night at La Vecchia Restaurant in Reno, 3501 st Virginia st from 6:00PM to 8/9:00PM. If you feel like it ride on down.

He's right again :)
I started using the most expensive tires i could buy and worked my way back to the street compound again.  Tires that come directly from HondaKawiYami-etc. are garbage but the next set purchased are MORE than enough tire for me to have some very quick laps.  I know of 4 separate SSA track instructors using standard issue street tires.  Four fast dudes proving you do not need Ben Spies level rubbers to get around in circles quickly.

Have a suspension guru go through the bike for 20 dollars.   Best money/traction dollar you can spend.  :)

Thanks for the advice.  Looking at your pictures, I'm sure I could learn a ton from the group.  I'm excited that there will be instructors for the track day as well. I'll be there on the 18th hoping to say hi and introduce myself.  Your advice is good on getting new tires.  Safety is paramount.  I'll bring my bike and like to see what other items may need to get right for a track day from the group and get the lay of the land etc.  I have a full suit, boots, back protector etc. already.

I loved Bear Valley, hoping to do a ride with you guys.  Its fun going on google and trying to find the windy roads in the green areas.  Has anyone went from 50 echo summit  and then north on highway 11 Pine road to French Reservoir and then the Soda Springs Road by Ice Lakes and come out by Donnor highway 80 area.  I don't have a BMW GS so maybe could be a dirt road and not so fun...  ha ha.

Dub I'm on South shore as well in Zephyr Cove.  Hope to meet you at the track day.  I also have weekends off if want to meet up sometime.  During the week it will be tough for me to make bike nights in Reno.  Mr. Gorgonzola look forward to checking out your ride.

Thanks guys, really appreciate you putting the forum together.

Andy

Very cool, can't wait to see ya there.  :howdy
We do have a taste of the track, both days about noon when the riders are having lunch, there are some rules/regulations to follow on these three laps as well. Adragon will clue you in on them.   And yes, there is usually a three group format/each 20min.  Here is the link, just in case you haven't come across it yet. http://www.sierrasportbike.com/infoTrackday.htm (http://www.sierrasportbike.com/infoTrackday.htm)

Will there be parade/taste of the track laps at lunch time? Three group format? 20 min sessions?
Darren, I just did my first track day last month on a 2fer1.  Pay the morning of.  Quite simple so long as you get everything from the list Sparky URL'ed checked off.  My street ready 9R didn't need anything but a good look-over and I already had leathers & boots.  Do a dry prep run on your bike at home so you'll feel confident she's ready.  I skipped that and it bit me.  Fortunately, someone had some parts I could borrow. You must follow the tech inspection AM time and riders briefing to the letter, but after that it's all fun.

If you're starting in C Group and don't know how fast you are, I suggest starting at the back after the C session's 2nd call to grid.  Once you're familiar with the track and how you pace, if you feel you're a fast C or C+ pace rider, get to the next grid right as they make their 1st session call.  That way you can be out front and have the whole track to yourself.

For any of your friends wanting to try the Taste of the Track, I've done that too.  Bikes must follow the same guidelines for prep, but inspection oversight isn't as technical.  Just be considerate not to endanger others by taking a bike that's leaking glycol, oil, dropping parts -- poses a safety concern for the real track riders later.  As a safety precaution, some body armor and boots would be wise.  Max speed is 45 MPH, no passing, no passing the pace rider and no falling back and racing forward at faster than 45 MPH.  It's a Taste of the Track, a privilege to those who want to get a feel for what it's like to be on a race track with other riders.  Other than the main straight, I'd regard this track as a handling course and very different than Thunderhill. 45 MPH, as a taste, will be plenty fast enough for 70% of it.

And feel free to ask questions before hand.   I know other SCR riders have been to a SSA/RFR Track Day, so you can ask them what you can expect too.

YOU'RE GONNA LOVE IT!

Dub, I checked my schedule unfortunately next Monday will be tough for me.  Most week nights by the time I get home its around 8 so hard to make bike nights on Monday.  If I get out early I'll be there at Dopplegangers.  I'll see you guys on the 18th for sure.

Mr Gorgonzola yeah my Ducati is an 2006 800 Supersport.  Definitely not the fastest Ducati but plenty fast for a track rookie like me.. ha ha.  Hope to see you guys on the 18th!!

Thanks guys for the responses. I've been to RFR many times the past three years and I did the SSA's double header in May. So I'm familiar with the trackdays. I'll be riding A group. Just did the SBK775 trackday last weekend. :-)

I'll be bringing a friend with me and would like to take her out for the taste of the track laps and just wanted to make sure it's ok to take her two up?

don't worry. if there's one thing I learned doing trackdays is that its not the bike, its the rider.  I've seen kawasaki 250's pass literbikes.  (and I've been passed by just about everyone and everything). It's a learning process and you will improve each time you go out.

Yes, you can pay at the track. Just drop Jerome an email to let him know you are coming. Another way if you want to use paypal is to use the "Donation" link on the paypal page and pay for the 2:1 that way, then put in the instructions to Jerome as to what your intentions are.

Hey, are Eddie and the other rider ok?... Hope so.
Have to say, taking inventory of worn out parts reflects an awesome weekend.  With my rear preloader backing itself off & sagging out, managed to rash pegs & belly pan.  New toe sliders & left knee puck shot.  Tires done.  Still managed to exceed my laptime goal.  Mr. 221, thanks for pulling ahead.  I got some different line ideas from following you.

:crackup Actually, it was "off line" at the sighting laps  ;D ;D, but then when the real thing started, that oil/white powder (whatever that is) on the track had me having to go slower on turn 16 in order to avoid it. Just to prove how trackdays DO improve your riding skills, I thought about posting these pictures on the forum.

Do not get me wrong here, I am not saying that I am an awesome rider or anything like that (which I am really not, yet...  ;D ;D) but I thought of posting these because we see all these nice pictures of the fast guys on the track dragging at LEAST their knee and, at least myself, always wondered: Have they started their trackdays having this type of riding skills?? And everybody that I ask always say no, that they started knowing nothing or almost nothing... but....come on...is really hard to picture that guy that drags his elbow having difficulties with his body positioning. So I thought it would be a good feedback to whoever is thinking about doing a trackday or either thinks that will not get there because does not have the "required" positioning or whatever mental block it is...

As you can see, the only thing I am comparing here is myself with MYSELF and I did notice a HUGE difference on the way I used to ride motorcycles not too long ago.

The pictures where I am with the yellow helmet were taken on my first trackday, in June, and the ones that i am with my black one were taken this last Saturday! So if you are ever wondering if doing a trackday would improve your riding skills... I think you already know the answer!! :cheers

If you want to become a better rider and also want some fun and thrill, the track is the place for you to be!

Peace!

I've been doing this four years and just hit a 2:38 last sat.  I'd run a 2:53 all the time up until this summer.  Spent a lot of time at RFR on T&T days with no help just figurin out for myself.  But orgs. like SSA can cut a lot of time out with the help of instructors/vendors.  Still, it takes a desire to improve as well.  A more confident and relaxed street experience, I think most notice right away after a track day or two.  Some of us get hooked so bad we quit street riding for the most part.

Having said that... There are a number of factors that played into making that time.  I snagged this Gixxer 1000 in April endowed with Ohlins internals up front and rear shock.  SPL tuned it for RFR and provided the slicks.  Dave Moss tweaked my suspension.  I learned about monitoring tire pressure throughout the day.  Also fixed a stuck piston in the rear brake caliper making it actually usefull.  Next move is gearing as I barely use 6th if at all and want to stay in 2nd at times rather than 1st.  Otherwise I just sit and wait for the tires to struggle turn by turn, and so far they haven't.  I don't think I've changed much, but the bike is definitely better that my former SRAD.

Finally got the pictures up! And thanks for "4the riders" for supporting the sport and doing this amazing job at RFR, not only by taking pictures but also helping out new riders like me with feedback and tips on what to do when out there.

Could have not said it better myself. The first two "bold" statements are very important when trying to improve your riding skills. Desire to improve should be a constant in your life on anything, but if you really wanna get better on the track, dedication is the key. I learned so much about bikes, riding techniques and motorcycle stuff in general in the last couple of months that it's hard to describe. Watching videos and reading books are a great tool to become a better rider (before my first trackday I watched a video of one lap of RFR more than 20 times, so I would have a fairly good idea of where the turns were. And believe me, that helps  ;D)

The other thing is figuring out by yourself. It's very nice when you are new to the track having the instructors showing you the lines and all that. But at a certain point, that starts to get into your way. You need to get out there and start figuring out stuff by yourself and, at least myself, when I have some one in front of me, I can't really focus on that (Steve saw it). So get a ride with the instructors at the beginning, have them show you the lines, but then go by yourself so you can "taste" the track at your own and then share your experience with them back, and maybe go for another ride together. Then you will (or they) be able to see where you improved and where you are still missing stuff. You will always be missing stuff, but there is some stuff that you are going to figure out by yourself, no matter how hard someone tries to describe it to you, you gotta feel it.

And the last one...yeah, I guess I am another one that quit riding on the streets...

Congrats on the new time my friend. I can only believe that jumping from any lower than 2:50's on that track is something to be really proud of!  :cheers I really hope to get there one day!  :blackbike :flagbrazil

Looks like you've got good form there in the pics JP.  I've been working with my friend out there with his 07 R6 and he's currently running low 2:50's.  His bike is geared, hotbodied, slicked, and cat removed but he's struggling with rear grip for some reason and I run half throttle behind him on the front straight.  Next time out we'll switch and see if it's the rider or the bike.  But it may be that your current setup makes it hard to "comfortably" cut your times.  I remember feeling like my Gixxer750  couldn't do much better that low 2:50's, but I could be a better rider now too.

Thanks buddy! But yeah, the bike does make a difference in certain circumstances... Specially if you are not feeling comfortable when riding it. That is a LOT in the "being a good rider" equation, I would say.

Let's see, the time to see if I am a "true rider" is coming and I am definitely up for the challenge. Hopefully I'll be able to see all those changes that you've noticed along your riding years and who knows, maybe share the asphalt with you some day! :thumbup
