Title: Jun 19 & Jun 20 SSA Track Days
Post by: Rick Bay (BRA) on May 25, 2010, 10:40:26 PM
Alright guys, we're less than a month from the next SSA Track Day and I'm already looking forward for this.

But the way, the last Track Day I heard a lot of rumors about the gravel on the pavement.

In fact, I had some scratches at the upper headlight fairing and forks of my bike.

I do not know if I can but I really would like to stop bye at the track one weekend before of the next event to sweep the critical dirty areas.

Someone have others ideas to make our Track Days each time better and more fun?

Hi Josh.

Well, let's see what happen at the next time. Last time the wind gave a big contribution for grave on the asphalt. But the way, I haven't seeing any sweeper truck over there. Do you know if they have it? I saw a blower only.  ::)

Anyway, I'm still available to take a broom to clean it if necessary.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Also, at the next time we want to see Adiggty, Oneup, n10sive and scotinexcile on the track. We missed these fast guys...
:P :P :P

the track was dirty as hell sat morning...BAD dirty... then during lunch, they went and blew it off...it started creeping back on sunday though.  i caught many rocks to bike, lid, neck, arms, knuckles...

me and mastalka were cranking out a buncha laps together and he nailed me with a proper ROCK...not just a piece of gravel, but a ROCK ROCK..big enough that i saw it coming and watched it hit me in the knuckle.  haha!

besides that... i had a buncha fun this past weekend. it took a few sessions for the track to "warm up to me" again, as it'd been so long since i'd last ridden it.  i guess i've been getting a little spoiled with the pavement i've been riding lately (mostly brand new pavement!)

We are and will be working with the track management to be sure it is improved. Removing and keeping down the dirt, pebbles, and that 1 knuckle finding rock will be found and put in prision for assault.  ;D

Alright! Thanks Josh... :P

They are supposed to be doing something about the track pebbles. I believe they will be putting a fog down on the ashpalt going up hoot and hollar.

I spoke with Dave from the Track Yesterday I have to call him again today to see how it went. I'll let you know josh and rick.

I already have 5 new guys to add to the 5 who went up last time; They know nothing about Fernley so they won't be worried about the rocks. ;D
I've got a 275 mph blower and brooms to contribute as well.  Let me know if they'll need it for spot treatments throughout the weekend. :)
Looking forward to another great ssa day up there. 8)

Justin Malstalka asked them to fog seal Hoot and Hollar. Dave G said they probably won't have it done by our June Date. That would take care of the pebbles your addressing now.  Looking forward to all that nice weather too. What a great Track day this will be.

Hey guys, new guy here who will be attending an SSA trackday for the first time!
I'm in for both days along with two other friends!  I am overly excited as my first trackday ever was at RFR. I can't wait

Been following the board since before the first trackday weekend last month. Seems to be a great group of people here. Nice to meet you all!

Hey t4rusaf. Welcome to the club. So your taking the plung? Good for you. I know your kinda nervious and excited all at the same time. We should have great weather.  You have any questions?

Are you ready to go already or do you need some help with anything? Let me know.

RFR is a lot of work. It's like boot camp. If you can ride RFR you can ride anywhere. Once you go here your really on the gas everwhere else.

Thanks for the warm welcomes guys.  Last time I was at RFR was in 2008 so it'll be like learning it all over again.  I really have no concerns as of yet, but only what others have mentioned from the May trackday about the hoot-n-holler and overall track conditions.

I do have one question, last time I had my friend make hotel arrangements and he picked a place called the "Lazy Inn". I wanted to sleep in the truck it was soo bad in there.  I told him never again will I stay there or let him make the arrangements!

So where is everybody staying?  Or any recommendations on where to stay?  We figured we'd get there and drop the bikes off at the track if that is a safe option.

Jason

Here in Fernley we have a Best Western and a Super 8 that are both OK. I've stayed in the Super 8 and it was fine by me and lots of parking if you have a trailer in tow.

Funny how we need the track just for therapy. Are we all sick or what? It just makes life worth living. You tent to forget about all the bull in your life and you just ride.  If the wife or family is mad. All you have to do is ride.

What about the meeting one week before the event?   8)

Don't you guys think we are not talking enough about this next SSA Track Day? We are only 10 days for the party!  :o

Well if you guys let me again, at least the Track Day will have a grid guy! Myself!

I know its coming down to the wire and we need to make a decision on whether or not we are gonna bring the RV. Well, its really not up to me but our other friend's parents that own it, haha.  Coming from Fairfield it will be like 200 bucks just for gas! That's why we were wondering if a lot of people will be camping.

Are the hotels already booked for that weekend?  I figured they wouldn't be so I haven't made any reservations  :o

I,m a track virgin looking to go on the 19/20, what is your program for first timers?. I have the saftey equipment, new bike (09ZX6R) and road riding experience not preformance riding. My goal is to become a safe preformance rider. Zoran said I should sell tickets and he is probably right. I,m also looking to go to Buttonwillow July 3/4 with Z2.

For first time track riders we start with sighting laps to get you aquainted with the track and how it is being on a track and the lines you should be working on. After the sighting laps you come back in to the pits and will have a C group meet to where you can discuss anything you might have on your mind. Any questions you have should be asked then. You will also get pointers for being out there. When you get ready to go back out on the track if you would like to follow, or be followed by an instructor come to the grid and tell the grid manager that you would like an instructor. We will then go out with you and help you around the track. If you feel comfortable at that point then you can just ride around working on what you would like to for the remainder of the day. Otherwise you can continue getting help from and instructor.
I'm not sure who all will be out there helping out but I will be.

Any other questions you have before going out there?  ;D

The track is the perfect place to be if your looking to become a safer rider. It can't get any better than the track in terms of learning for someone who already has the basics of riding down, which it sounds like you do.
1) You must have all the safety gear
2) Your bike is inspected to be in proper working order
3) You have a controlled environment. (People making sure the track is clear, everyone going the same way, no ditches, fence posts, etc., flaggers to inform you of current conditions and if they change, and medical personnel at the site already.
4) You don't have to worry about anything except your riding. (No tickets, cars, trucks, pedestrians, etc.) 100% focus on riding, which is huge!

I don't know why Zoran told you to sell the tickets, but I'd say come on out. You'll have a blast and learn a TON! Just don't be afraid to ask questions. I will be there. Come find me, I'll be under a Code 4 Racing easy up. Red bike, Lt. blue leathers. I'll show you around. Don't feel intimidated please. I think that is a major problem people have with doing trackdays. Especially for the first time. We all started as newbies at some point. You probably won't be the slowest person there and even if you are, who cares! That's not what it's about. We are all family at the track. It's the perfect place for people like you. Come on out. You'll be glad you did!  :)

Hi all,

I really wish I could do the trackday next weekend but due to financial problems and a front bald tire (for the track), i wont be able to. But I was thinking about going out there just to check it out, get the feeling about it and meet you guys and wondering if that would be ok... Saying that cause I have no idea how busy you guys get over there, therefore it might not be the best time for a newbie to show up...  ;D

In case I am wrong, are you guys planning to meet somewhere and go to the track together? (My bad if this information is already somewhere else but i tried looking for it and couldn't find...) What time and where would that be? Also, if you guys can figure out something that a newbie can do on a trackday, i'll be more than happy to help...

Let me know what yours thoughts are...

Come on out Kawaninja. We probably could find something for you to help out with. If not you could at least meet some of us. We may not have time to sit and shoot the breeze, but at least you can meet us and get familiar with the basics on how a trackday works. Thanks for offering. That is very nice of you.

Come on out Kawaninja. We probably could find something for you to help out with.

Thank you Adiggity. Then yeah... I'm definitely coming! And depending on what happens from the "tire offers" I might even go for it. That would be Awesome!!!!!! But as far as meeting somewhere to ride to the track together goes, is there any place where we can meet and them ride there (for Saturday, for example)??

I might make to this weekend bike ride and maybe talk a little bit more about it there.

Sweeeeeeet!

Kawaninja, there will be many tires at the track, new ones or race take off's... you'll find a deal that will work for you. also there will be vendors there that can put your tire on for you.

My bad... What I meant was what the deal would be? Like...how much would you guys be willing to sell the tire in case you had an extra one that matches the description I gave.

How about price? Could you give me a ball park on how much they would charge to change the front tire, for example? And (it might be a stupid question but...) do they take credit cards???

Yes. They do take a credit card. All kinds!  ;)
Last track day I bought a set of tires from Brian SPL. I used an International Brazilian Credit Card to pay it. My Dad in Brazil bought the tires for me.

KawaNinja,
I always like to arrive with my bike fully ready to go before I arrive at the track.  It can be a little overwhelming to try and get everything sorted out while you are there. It is much cheaper to deliver a wheel to the shop as opposed to delivering the whole motorcycle.  There are a few guys here that sell take-offs (Tires that a racer used for 20 laps and took off for the next event)

I would recommend contacting a local shop that can help you get outfitted properly.
I use 2WCP for my tire needs but there are other shops as well. I got these names from the Member Business section on this forum.

2 Wheel Custom Performance (Steve)
775-303-1857
Superbike Performance Lab (Brian or Sam)
and Moto Source. (Rich)
send them a PM or look them up on the computer box.

I was just there for my first purchase  from them and Steve suggested  I try a set of the new PIRELLI DIABLO ROSSO CORSA's  for this upcoming trackday. When I got home I did a price check on what they cost as I did not have an idea on these tires. I was blown away  :o with  what I paid, it even included  mounting heck i even got some chain lube and the total was less then any price I could find for a set of just tires on the internet. You cant go wrong with 2 wheel Custom Performance ;D Saw Justino there to.

Thanks for all the information guys! Appreciate it. So, before I purchase the track day pass (I'm doing it now, you guys talked me into it! haha) Is there anything else that I should be aware of to get ready for the track day as far as bike specs goes?? Cause my biggest concern is to buy the pass, get there and have my bike failing the inspection...

so i'll have pretty much one week and my credit card limit  :) to get my bike ready and I definitely can use all help you guys are willing to give!!

Is it next weekend yet??? ;D

I'm sorry you're having trouble getting an answer. I understand that you will be getting the tires before the event and that your concern is that your bike will fail inspection... Most of us trailer the bikes to the track but my first 5 trackdays i rode my bike and you can too.   I don't know of anyone meeting up for the ride out in the morning.  You will probably need some extra gas and extra water, so maybe you can hook up with someone beforehand and work out getting some supplies out there.  Jerome used to bring my fuel and gatorade when I was new at this.
Click on my name "Justino" then click on PM or private message. send me a private note with your phone number and I'll give you a call or text message and I'll make sure your bike passes tech inspection.
My name 'Justino' is above that picture of the TV personality i am using as an Avatar. Click on that.
i'll PM you right now so you can see what it looks like.  (On the home page of this site, under Sierra Sportbike Assoc. on the top of the page is the phrase 'my messages'
Click on that :D

I’m sorry, but I need to let you guys Know about this…

I applied for a job in San Francisco and I have to go for an interview this Saturday. I apologize about that but I can not miss it. Maybe shortly I’ll be moving to San Francisco too . You guys know I’ve been complained about my job up here because it is very slow.

So, I have my heart broken to say this: I can not be at Fernley Race Track this weekend anymore.

Please. Jerome, Alberto, Justino and all others SSA members forgive me for not be able to work this weekend at the track. Although I’m very sad about this, I also can say I’m happy and exciting for this new opportunity.

I hope everybody have a lot of fun at the Fernley Race Track.

Andy's idea of Sushi is going to the waters edge, plunging his fist into the icy depths to retrieve the fish, then placing a large portion of the fish into his mouth as it is still grasping at the last chance for life.  That's sushi, and that's MANLY

I suppose it will be awhile before he achieves Zoran status where he can just say "Fish, get in my boat" and it happens LOL

OK...he can eat sushi then. Rick can beat the wigglers over the head with a soccer ball ;D

Rick Sushi. When you get back pick a spot to go where ever it's easiest for you. Or you  can make it closer for us. That's a great idea. We can all meet on our bikes for Sushi and make a ride out of it. I'm retired so any time is good with me.

One Tuesday after Bike Night I'm Sure Alberto can get off early if he asks his boss nicely. ;D ;D

Taking hungry people away from a LaVecchias restaurant is taking advantage.
Maybe I'll bring my own beer and a BBQ.

Doesn't make any sense, save it for another night.

Hey SSA peoples!  ;D  This is my first post up.  I found out about your trackday on BARF.  Looking forward to RFR.  I need to avenge my first session crash from two years ago that totaled my bike.  Oh stupid decreasing radius' and front tire washouts...how I hate thee.  Anyways, I'm looking forward to it but was wondering if there was going to be tire service out there.  I need a spare just in case but can't find any in my area that have them readily available (Contiforce SM 150/70/17).  See you all Saturday at the track or Friday night at the Fernley Best Western. Tokyolow81 my first trackday at RFR was a front slide (25mph max just cosmetics) look me up, lets do a few laps together (if I can stay with you). Duc white #13  and exorcise the whole thing.
ps a year later it was time for the rear to loose grip. This time i successfully saved my Duc, by sliding to the gravel with it on my back!!?? ;D

Welcome to the SSA Tokyolow81. Yes we will have tyre services at the track. It's SPL. He sells Michelin and Pirelli tyres. Mostly track compound. AS far as I know. Maybe some else would know if He sells street compounds.

Good for you to battle you demons. RFR is waiting for you. Now that the Track knows your returning for a rematch. Ride well

Hey guys,

I would like to thank all of you that made my first (of 1000s - as long as my body can handle it  :D) track day to be such a Blast. I have no words to thank you all for your help and support. Already mentioned that, late at the track, but will say it again: that was one of the best days of my life, seriously! Everytime I was about to do turn 23 I was smiling inside of my helmet knowing that the straight was coming right ahead. Holy moly that felt good. I'm definetily hooked. Looking forward for August.

I will spread the word to every single rider that I know and have them going there next time.

And Jerome, about the video, not quite sure if should post it. I could swear that I was reeeeeeeeeeally close to the ground on some turns but when I saw the video I was "surprised" how far from it I was  :'(. Maybe I'll post it so you guys can have fun with my "knee movements" thinking that I was about to slide them while it was a mile from the ground  ;D. Hopefully I will push harder next time. Gotta impress Adiggity!  ;D

Again, thanks for providing this guys, from the reopening of the track to running a really smooth trackday (the trackday veteran speaking here). I bet that there is a lot more work being done behind the curtains and I do appreciate that! Go SSA!

Yup, that was my problem.  Actions speak louder than words, you still had little trouble pulling ahead on a bike with lights :P  I made a lot of progress getting to know the bike.  The sportmax GP in the rear was my limiting factor in the afternoon.  Hoping Brians Superbike Pirelli's give me a bit more security.

Just want to thank SSA for yet another great weekend up at RFR.  It just keeps getting better and better so we are looking forward to a return visit in August with soome fresh faces!!
I can't believe how many women were up there this time.  Other promoters would be envious; I think there were more women there than the VIP Z2 women's day even without the free tshirts, haha.
Thanks for a class act, SSA, great grid, fresh fruit, etc etc.  It was all appreciated and noticed.
Only down side is that I can't get that poor dead- mouse- in- the- leathers image out of my freaking head....wah!My eyes!!!!   Even worse than the fact that I killed that poor snake off the chicanes and the fresh tire flat off turn 4. :o :P ;D

I might as well chime in too as it was a great weekend. Saturday was not working for me but Sunday was nearly perfection with great weather and lots of good laps even if I still can't get quite to where I used to be, I am feeling much better after all last summer with no track sessions. In that time Alberto dropped probably 10 seconds or more a lap! Good running except for that endo on the grid where I almost piled into you! :o

A big thanks to everybody for making it, as always, you meet the best folks at the track! Oh yeah, love the fruit in the morning too. Nice touch.

It's Tuesday and I'm in withdrawl already... :D

You should put the other picture of Chad sitting on the wrong side of his bike next to that ;D

Wow... I didn't know the photographers would post the pictures on the web! Cool... Squared cool!!!  :D :D

I thought this one was funny... and following the same "caption" line... it could be something like:

"Don't know where to put your toes when taking a corner?? SSA Trackdays is your solution!" or "How to NOT place your feet into corners!"  ;D ;D

http://4theriders.com/image.php?print=/pics/trackdays/2010/06.19.10-rfr/SATURDAY/R6_BLACK/WHITE_SUIT/NM1U6720.JPG

(Tried attaching but it said that the upload folder is full - what does that mean?)

John was following me when those pictures were taken and came to me after the session was over and said "I don't know if you were scrapping your feet but your toes were reeeeeally close to the ground!!"... actually I did scrap them!  ;D ;D (Wish I had my knee out on that picture, that would've been so much cooler!!)

Awesome pictures guys, especially the "body position" one (Chad). Waaay Funny!  :D
