Title: 2016 SSA Fecta - Roll Call - Saturday 07/16/16
Post by: GreenMachine on July 14, 2016, 11:26:38 AM
All SSA rides in one day!
Not a tri-fecta.  Better!  A Fecta.  Everything.

This is a full day's ride with as many breaks as necessary, but breaks slow everything down and will make it impossible to complete.  No coffee to start with, so that'll put me on the road 30 minutes sooner right away!  I'm going with or without others, so if you want to partner up for a portion of the route, here's how I plan on taking it.

I'll start out by hitting Monitor after dawn and work my way north, down hwy 50, Icehouse, Eleven Pines, MRR, Dog Valley road, hwy 49, etc.

South Route start 15 minutes prior to dawn (5:45 AM), thus 5:30 AM.  Sunset is at 8:30 PM, so we'll need to keep hustling to get it all in.  Something to think about: we've never finished before dark.

Approximate ride distance is only 600 miles for those out to accomplish the ride feat.  Shorter for those seeking to partner up for shorter legs of the ride.

Past History of the SSA Fecta

2014

Saturday 06/14/2014 *** MORE INFO IN POSTS BELOW ***
Meet up is at the Maverick Country Store gas station (hwy 341 & the roundabout).

We depart Maverik as soon as all the posted riders show up or 5:15 AM
(sunrise is 5:31 AM), whichever comes first.

If we're going to do it, might as well do it while the weather isn't too hot (forecast for 90̊ in the lower foothills), 80̊ for Reno, morning low is suppose to be 51̊.

For those who don't know what this ride is, I'll give a brief history.  There once was a ride referred to as the Tri-Fecta, taking in Yuba, La Porte & Buck's Lake (three passes).  I don't recall ever hearing of anyone who attempted that ride and it was thought to be an insane amount of riding to do for one day anyway.

Along comes TahoeBrian5 and his long rides.  He was interested in the Tri-Fecta, but comes up with the idea of the Fecta, all the SSA rides in one day.   Now that would be insane!!!  Less VC & the truck route, that ride was accomplished in 2011 (http://www.sierrasportbike.com/smf/index.php?topic=3530.0) by the following SSA members:

1) TahoeBrian5
2) SparkyGixxer
3) BigCat
4) GreenMachine

To our credit however, the last two passes in the Tri-Fecta were done in laps.   It was a very long day, but I still remember it like it was yesterday.  Epic!

It's a quest ride that requires stamina, a love for riding, a good riding pace, an adventurous attitude, and willpower.

The ride starts near dawn, should cover over 600 miles and completes sometime around or after dusk.  Meet up is at the Maverick gas station (hwy 341 & the roundabout). Yes at the base of VC highway & 395/I580.

This is your roll call.  I'm going.

Hard core! I'm deciding whether to head out to San Jose tomorrow evening for some Motogymkhana action.  I love honing my skills riding around cones.

An overnight?  What's the primary destination/ride location?

Want me to meet you at the Chevron in South Lake?

So your plan is to start from Maverik, do Geiger/VC/Truck route, then down and do Monitor before heading up to Highway 50?

If that's the case I will meet you at the 7-11 (https://www.google.com/maps/place/7-Eleven/@38.9158281,-119.7181684,17.75z/data=!4m13!1m7!3m6!1s0x809997c596e75389:0x2372db17b0f66b7f!2sMueller+Ln,+Minden,+NV+89423!3b1!8m2!3d38.9704486!4d-119.7795741!3m4!1s0x0:0x2ac15d6d03a53196!8m2!3d38.9151758!4d-119.7159878) on 395 as you are leaving Gardnerville. We can ride down 395 and do 89 Westbound, over Monitor, through Markleeville, over Luther and into Meyers. If you are leaving at 5:15, I'll be there at 6:30.

The 7-11 is out of the way for both of us.  I'm on the same route as last year.  Meet me at the Maverik 395 & hwy 89 (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Maverik+Adventure's+First+Stop/@38.9581754,-119.7807144,607m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x8099bd8e6e2c5de9:0x7cf2002fc59557b7!8m2!3d38.9581754!4d-119.7785204) in Minden at 6:30 instead. If I don't hear back from you, I'll ride to the 7-11.  It's not that far away.  Maverik will put you at the same distance and me too, without riding out of our way.

Route
Actually at that time of morning, before dawn, I will be skipping VC.  It's not a scheduled ride, technically.  So Reno straight to Minden.  I can easily be there by 6:30 AM.

Plan is to follow the normal Reno to Monitor route, so Reno, Markleeville, Monitor, up and over (picture), back, jump onto 88, then Luther, S. Lake, Meyers, 50 Icehouse and you know the rest.

I like that there's someone else who likes motorcycle riding as much as I do.  :thumbup

I'm bringing water with a lunch sandwich in a cool bag with ice for tomorrow.   Let's kill this thing!

We will make great time with just the two of us. I remember back in 2014 that guy on the sport touring BMW held us up for the first half of the ride before he gave up and bugged out.

You guys have fun, if you included 36 I would have considered going  :)  My work schedule took me to Sonora today so was able to "drive" Sonora and Carson pass today, dont think either of those are on your route.  Sonora was busier than I've would have thought, but Carson wasnt bad.   Would have been much more enjoyable if I could have taken the bike.

We can consider this as an alternate.  It doesn't matter.  When we make Foresthill we can either take the standard longer and faster route to Auburn & I-80 or the slightly shorter and slower route to Iowa Hill.  One goes left.  One goes right.  Don't matter to me.  We still end up in Colfax.

If you get a wild hair, we're generally in the Colfax area heading towards Dog Valley around noon to 1 PM, if you want to intercept us.  Several others have done that in the past.  If you do, I can check my cellphone for SSA PMs or I think you can text me.  Ride with us for however much you like, them split for home.  I can let you know our ETA at various destinations.   Easy to intercept us, but we will be moving...trucking along.

Wow!  That was awesome.  A good ass kicking is what I needed.  But not from CHP.  Ask Dub.  That guy was crowding our lane, so screw him!  You tell him Dub!!   :crackup

Trip counter on mine showed 702, door to door.  What's another hundred miles when you were expecting 600, right?

Oh man, that first 350 was a cake walk compared to the last 350!  Didn't seem like it at the time, because even after 350 I was fresh.  But today!  :hangover  Not so much.  I'm beat, mostly mentally.  What a way to spend an exhaustive time on the bike though, doing what you love, riding with your favorite roads with your friends.

I had a panic attack though when we stopped for a water break at the top of Bucks.  Dub was going over his trip map and it wasn't showing our full path.  Don't tell me we have to do this again?!!!  Allllllllll rrrrrrright!  Set it and let's start over.

Uploading pics in a few.

You guys our crazy.   GM, your bike has over 100k?

I'm back from my  little road trip as well.  Traffic is crazy in California, so congested.  Thank god for lane splitting, but it does wear you out.  I was lucky, pretty much zero CHP's, my average speed on 80 was about 85 indicated when it was free and clear, running with no radar.   My new Pilot Road 4'a are great!

I haven't checked the trip log in my GPS to see what it recorded yet.

I tried to make a map of our route in Google maps, but I couldn't do it inside the 10 waypoint limit.

So I made a map of our route in Bing maps, which lets you have many more waypoints. Except they don't let you share a map with more than 10 destinations. So it's sitting in my browser but I can't post the link.

I'm not sure why the state of online maps is so crappy right now. The old Google maps was excellent. Then they made it shitty with the new version; I've mostly gotten used to it, but there are some limitations you just can't get around.

I'm having the same trouble.  You can abbreviate by stringing destinations, like Nevada City to Quincy, then drag various points on the map to position the true route taken, but it fails when I'm close to the end.  I think there are too many deviations from what it wants to be as the route and goes ape crazy.

I can't get it to map MRR & 11 Pines at all.  It does not register as a valid route, but jeep roads further east are.  If you skip from Placerville to Foresthill, it'll just take the main road through Georgetown.  Best I could get it to show was 679 miles, but then when I looked at the map, it had ruined my route over Monitor and I couldn't get it to adjust.

POS!

I think this gives the general idea.

Was another excellent day for riding.  Nothing bad happened to us, we navigated all the swept on gravel and didn't take any excursions off of La Porte, we got to give a little thrill to a couple riders, that touring guy on Monitor and the dirt bike kid at Bucks, got our picture taken along the way by some really nice people, who navigated us safely through a transmission oil spill (THANK YOU RICH!), we got to chum around with them and along the way, the roads we took weren't too too crowded that it was a problem.  No stoppages for road construction.   Not too many hidden surprises and none we couldn't handle, like the water draining across the road out by French Meadows Reservoir or the cattle grate that was so deep I thought I was going to break my rear swingarm off.

So many great little hidden spots.  Got to survey the damage of the King Fire.  Got to get our kicks on some great Sierra roads en mass and home before dark...so a lot less danger from deer out feeding before dark.

We quested this thing and we conquered it, again. :banana2  Feel pretty good to say that.

Have you guys tried downloading Google Earth? I've been playing around with it lately and have had better luck building routes off the beaten path.
https://www.google.com/earth/

There are a lot more functions available but in terms of sharing anyone trying to view the link would probably have to download Google Earth as well because it appears when you try and open on Google Maps (which is an option) a lot of what you create goes missing.

I have.  I started using it when it came out around 2006.  Was the coolest thing since sliced bread.   I'd create 3-D fly-overs, saving them in the default KMZ format.  From what I understand there's a way to export the KMZ file to other devices, but have been unsuccessful and there hasn't been a great need for it.

The automotive GPS units I have wouldn't accept the format anyway.  I imagine there's an APP for cellphones though that could probably do it.

That's due to the same limitation I was talking about; you can only have 10 destinations. I have a bunch of route's created with old google maps that I saved as links to reference later. But when you click the link, it opens them in new google maps and the same thing happens; a bunch of the route I created is missing.

Riding Japan again this summer (see private area for report).  Early Sat/Sun mornings there are some fast guys that ride Mines, have hooked up once with them.  Also been riding 49 a good bit too.

If I can get the right type of bike or put handlebars on mine, I will try a Fecta with you guys eventually.

I wouldn't think you'd be the type for this kind of ride.  It's not all smooth road either.

But you'd be welcome to give it a go.  Most who've started usually complete it.  I believe we've only had one rider who gave in half way through.   Look into it.
