Title: Chain Lube Question . . .
Post by: JetFueler on August 12, 2009, 12:19:19 AM
I need to know what is the best brand of chain lube to use that wont fly all over my rear wheel.
I was told there's a 'wax' type of chain lube that you spray on after cleaning the chain and you wait for 15-30 minutes and then ride?

Sounds good.  Any information is greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Scott

go for a ride. While the chain is still warm, lube it, then let it sit for the night. Next morning just wipe it down real fast before you take off.

Maxima "Chain Wax" is what your looking for. I have it in stock. Sticks very well to the chain as long as you don't put excessive amounts on.

I used to use the Maxima stuff when it first came out but was not impressed with it. Here I am sure it would be fine but when I lived on the coast by the Atlantic, chains with the Maxima would surface rust like crazy. The best I have found is Bel Ray Super Clean chain lube as it was the only thing that gave decent surface protection. The regular Bel Ray is messy but the Super Clean works really well and goes on with a noticable white coating over the chain. I usually do the kerosene and toothbrush cleaning when it gets real dirty and then the Super Clean.

Any bike shop can get it for you but Mach 2 here in Fernley should have some in stock as they usually get a few cans in for the shelf when I ask for one.

I have used the Bel Ray for years, good stuff. Whatever brand you use you want to make sure you get the chain "Hot" prior to lubing it. Clean it real good, then go out on the interstate run the bike up to 80 mph for 15 minutes, then pull off and lube it.

O-ring chains need very little lube.

Thanks for the tips.  I knew about the heating and cleaning it.  Just had to ask about the best wax.
I will definately go do it.  Appreciate the help.   ;D

Call me crazy, but I lubricate my chain every 200 miles.
An ounce of prevention. . .

Not crazy but a man of wisdom.  I change the oil in all my vehicles including bikes if the oil turns mid to dark brown, out it goes!  Cheaper than repairs.

Lowes carries this.

DuPont Teflon
Dry Film Lubricant

Item #: 213197       Model: D00110101

works well and is inexspensive.

I personally like the Repsol stuff! I was using the bel ray super clean for years until I was given a sample of the resol lube and I liked it so much more thats all I use now.

Every couple of hundred miles here also, but with Tri-Flow.

I use the Motul chain cleaner and lube. It is great stuff too. I personally didn't like the wax, but maybe I was just using too much of it.....too hard to clean I thought. The straight lube seems less messy.

Like n10sive said, I just wipe it down after lubrication and never had a problem with it spraying on my wheel.

his first words are.
I will start off by saying that I am a worthless squid rookie and I suck at everything in life.

Sad and probably far from the truth.  Mistakes are just mistakes

Yep, none of us are above making mistakes.....ok, most of us. Sorry Jerome, forgot about you.  :P

Unfortunately he paid big for his.....Doug Polen knows about getting things cut off in the sprocket. I'm thinking he started his post off with that just to hush the people who love to give others shit at any opportunity......

Yea, it seams bike forums have alot more people dieing to jump someones shit for the smallest imperfection... Another reason why I'm glad I found this place. I would have be flamed for buying 1000 for my first real street bike, even though I've rode bikes my whole life. Sucks for the dude that lost his finger tips. I think he is lucky he didnt loose more and not just the tips...

You bought a 1000 for your first bike?! :-X  Well, I bought my 1000 so I wouldn't have to shift too much. ;)

back to the topic at hand (no pun intended)....  :o

I use ATF (auto trans fluid).  Pretty easy really. When I come back from a ride....
Pop it up on the stand.
Start the bike, pop it in gear dip some on from a small soap bottle like the ones you can get at REI for camping. (think small catchup bottle).
Drip it on with the wheel going round.
Let it run a few seconds.
Turn it off.
Spin the wheel by hand and wipe it with a rag.
Let it sit overnight.

Ride on...    I've got 20k miles on a chain that looks pretty much brand new.
Do you get any oil to fling off afterward? seams like that would be a bit messy..

Just curious, since I've never heard of this method. Do you have an o-ring chain? I know ATF will eat certain types of rubber.

I work at a drivetrain specialist shop. I have seen ATF eat rubber transmission mounts away when there is a leak.....actually, I should be more clear. The ATF turns the usually hard rubber mount into a mushy gushy mess. Yes, they have seals in transmissions, but a lot of them aren't really rubber. Most "rubber" out there isn't really rubber anymore. I'm not trying to say it doesn't work, just curious if it effected the o-rings in the o-ring type chains. That is all. Just have never heard of it. Thanks for sharing.

The ATF will not eat the butyl rubber o-rings in your chain.  It will also not turn them hard or to mush.

The reason GP gets such mileage out of his chain is he rides an underpowered girl's bike like an old lady. :P
